Winner of 3 major awards at Sundance 2021, this outstanding drama is based on the true story of a Kosovo war widow fighting against patriarchy.
This debut feature is inspired by real-life beekeeper Fahrije Hoti. Seven years after her husband went missing in the Kosovo war, she is struggling to provide for her two children. Her plan to establish a women’s co-operative is met with scorn by men in her village where a woman’s morals can be questioned for even the slightest show of independence. However, Fahrije is no ordinary woman.
The lean, punchy script and Yllka Gashi’s superbly controlled central performance bring the legacy of war and the strength of women into sharp and rewarding focus.
Basholli’s film is a spare and unsparing portrait of a survivor who refuses to bend to ancient traditions. As storytelling, this is as good as it gets. – Randy Myers, San Jose Mercury Times
It’s based on a true story of feminist defiance and healing that counts as one of the more affecting tales of recovery to come from the conflict…– Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times
