In 1935 Antoni Benaiges is hired as a teacher in a small, isolated village in Burgos, Spain. There, he establishes an intense relationship with his students, a group of young boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 12. To them, he makes a promise: he will take them to see the sea for the first time in their lives.
75 years later, the granddaughter of one of those students, who has set out in search of her grandfather, comes across the wonderful, yet tragic story of this teacher and the tale behind a promise.
The Teacher who Promised the Sea is a tenderly realised and strikingly well shot film anchored by a fine performance by Auquer, whose appealing portrayal makes us bond to Antonio very quickly. – Jason Blake, Limelight
This film is a joy, despite such sadness… – Stephen Romei, The Australian
