Parallel Mothers tells the story of two women, both single mothers, who give birth in a shared maternity ward in Madrid. Both women harbor fears and unresolved emotions over failed relationships, seeking support in one another and wandering the hospital halls in mutual apprehension for what the future holds.
The film elegantly balances drama and comedy, moving through the tale of two unlikely friends with substance and sincerity. Almodóvar explores the experience of Motherhood through two women from vastly different walks of life, but who have both fallen pregnant by accident. Cruz’s performance is surefooted and complex, while Smit is emotionally raw and energised. Together they create a film bent by hardship and pierced by tragedy, which eventually winds itself into something beautiful, hope.
If you’re already a fan of Almodovar’s work this is essential viewing; if you haven’t been introduced to his very special world before, Parallel Mothers will be a great place to start. – David Stratton, The Australian
Almodovar crafts a heartrending drama about a mothering impulse to treat wounds and nurture a healthy future, leading to a conversation about his country’s Civil War and Francisco Francos dictatorship. – Brian Eggert, Deep Focus Review
