An 83-year-old man poses as a resident in a Chilean nursing home to see if he can find signs of abuse. Seeking to hire someone to be the mole in the nursing home, the director conducts an hilarious casting process, because the seniors who have responded to the ad are baffled why anyone would want to hire someone over 80. But they jump at the opportunity to break their mouldy routines and be mentally stimulated with a new gig.
While it’s filmed and scored in the style of a playful spy movie, it is most remarkable in its quieter moments, as the true heart of the story emerges. As this real-life story shifts, the result is a charming, thought-provoking insight into later life.
The Mole Agent is already one of the most heartwarming spy movies of all time — a rare combination of genres that only works so well because it sneaks up on you. – Eric Kohn, Indie Wire
It’s so much more than a whodunnit, and all but the hardest hearts will fall in love with its spirited group of characters who have so much left to give. – Time Out
