Overgard (Mads Mikkelsen) has been stranded for several days in the Arctic after an airplane crash. He regularly attempts to send signals to the outside world. Finally help comes with a rescue helicopter – just as a violent storm hits the area. The chopper crashes and now there are two survivors – one of them is severely injured. Overgard has to decide whether to remain in the relative safety of his makeshift camp or to embark on a deadly trek through the unknown in hopes of making it out alive.
Arctic received a 10-minute standing ovation at its premiere at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.
Reviews
“It would be easier to count the words spoken in Joe Penna’s survival thriller Arctic than the number of beats your heart skips while watching it.” – Peter Howell, Toronto Star
“Though a decidedly minimalist action picture, Arctic achieves maximum impact thanks to Mikkelsen’s rugged, yet tender portrayal of a man whose only choice is to chill, or be chilled..” – Leigh Paatsch, Herald Sun
“Stirring cinematography by Tómas Örn Tómasson, who captures the film’s stark Icelandic location with sweep and dazzle, plus an evocatively pensive, strings-heavy score by Joseph Trapanese, rounds out this enervating and exhilarating film..” – Garry Goldstein, Los Angeles Time
